When buying your engagement ring you need to considered think what diamond is best for you. As well as your budget determining your choice, you also need to remember four things about diamond rings, and these are the cut, clarity, colour and carat. Diamonds are available in separate sizes, colours and also qualities.
Cut
Diamond
The cut refers to the shape of the diamond once the craftsman has cut and refined the stone. The cut is what gives the diamond its shine. Its cut depends largely on the raw shape of the diamond and whether there is any natural flaws, which will need to be removed. A diamond is cut in a way to best reflect the light, which is what causes it to sparkle. The most common shape is the round diamond or great cut, and these are the most original engagement ring shape. For a more fancy diamond cut there is the marquise cut, which is a slender oval shape, which is often used in multiple stone settings. A pear shaped diamond is in a tear drop shape, which looks lovely as a solitaire diamond. Emerald cut rings are rectangular and the princess cut is square, which is quite a contemporary diamond shape. Heart shape diamonds can be lovely as an engagement ring, although this cut is more often found in other jewellery like pendants or earrings.
Clarity
When they talk about the clarity of a diamond they are referring to it's inclusions or blemishes. These may be crystals of foreign material or cracks, and in diamond rings, mostly invisible to the naked eye. The clarity of a diamond is graded. The higher the grade the great capability the diamond is considered to be. A flawless diamond is very rare and costs more than those with blemishes.
Colour
Diamonds usually appear to be white, but if settled side by side you can notice a contrast in colour, moving through separate shades of white, through to yellow and even brown tones. The clearer a diamond is the more rare it is. They are rated on a scale from D, being the clearest, and then down through the alphabet. A diamond rated as a D is rare and is therefore one of the most expensive. There are, however, extremely rare coloured diamonds, but these are in colours that are considered to be fancy, together with pink, blue, red, green and moving yellow.
Carat
The carat of a diamond refers to its weight. A diamond may appear to be larger than someone else but it could still be the same carat weight, depending on how it is cut. A diamond may look like it has more carats because the top covering is larger, but it may be cut shallower. This affects the brilliance of the diamond as there is less depth for the light to reflect through. The more carats the diamond has the larger the diamond is in regards to its weight.
